Reuben: The Mandrakes, a Mother, and the Firstborn Son

The mandrakes draw the eye first, but the artwork carries a much larger family story.

Reuben was Jacob and Leah’s firstborn son. In Genesis, Reuben finds dudaim, traditionally identified as mandrakes, and brings them to his mother Leah. That episode became one of the details most closely associated with his story.

In the artwork, the mandrakes are woven into a richer composition of vivid reds, pinks, warm tones, geometric forms and the map of Eretz Israel. They are not presented as an isolated botanical symbol, but as part of a visual language about family, longing, memory and inheritance.

The warm palette gives the piece an intimate emotional energy, while the map reconnects Reuben’s personal story to the future tribal inheritance of Israel.

Reuben is the story of the firstborn son, a mother’s world, and a small biblical detail that became part of a much larger heritage.
